Emmet: Teif in Meinem Herzen
Directed by Lara-Sophie Milagro and produced by Label Noir
A theatre film about the story of Emmett Till, based on a play by Clare Coss, translated into German by Christiane Büchner. “Emmett − Tief in meinem Herzen” (“Emmett – Deep in My Heart”) is a film with theatrical elements, telling the story of the 14-year-old Black teenager Emmett Till, who became the victim of a racist murder in Mississippi, USA, in 1955. This murder is considered the spark for the civil rights movement in the USA as well as a global, public-media confrontation with racism.
During the spotting session with director Lara-Sophie Milagro and producer Tibor Locher, we spoke about circles, cycle. Patterns of violence, repetition of behavior and the inevitability of events. I put a lot of thought into how to represent these concepts musically, while of course expressing the underlying emotion of the respective scenes. I ended up using loops of repetition, sampling sounds and voices from the film itself, and re-introducing and re-using materials across all the cues to create a sort of larger loop throughout.
